When Brett Goldstein, Jason Segel, and Bill Lawrence were asked how they got Harrison Ford on board, Segel said that Goldstein originally wanted a "Harrison Ford type" and was going to audition with people like Ford. Segel told Goldstein that they had to at least bring it to Ford first, thinking that he would immediately turn it down, but at least other people would hear that Harrison Ford was being brought into the project, which would generate interest from other notable actors.

Goldstein still doesn’t understand what he did to convince her, but was excited nonetheless. From the reviews I’m reading here, people seem to either love this show or dislike it pretty strongly, and I feel like it might depend on the reviewers reaction to Jason Segal.
The relationships are complex and emotional, and the very real human challenges are well drawn
I’ve enjoyed his movies and I think he’s perfect for this role – and the addition of Harrison Ford takes the show to an even higher level. The writing is excellent, the story is fresh and the characters are original without going too stereotypically weird.
It can be ridiculously funny and bring you to tears the next minute
I was really disappointed after the second episode when I realized I should wait for more. I recommend!
