Plot
The residents of a run-down French apartment building battle an army of deadly, rapidly multiplying spiders. The visually striking buildings in which the action takes place were not built for the film. They are the Picasso Arenas in Noisy-le-Grand, near Paris, designed in the 80s by architect Manuel Núñez Yanowsky. As TN feels the effects of the spider bite, he is seen wearing one of the new shoes. Before the bite, he was not wearing shoes. He would not have put on the right shoes after the attack/poisoning.
The front door that you could just open?
What tangled webs they weave when the survivors cannot escape. Infested is the latest European apartment/isolation horror, with works such as 2007’s Rec from Spain and 2022’s Lockdown Tower, the latter more reminiscent of this type of run-down building and both from France. Although I liked the other two better, this film still works. At least the first half.The resident animal expert of a neglected tower block brings home a poisonous spider, only to lose it almost immediately, and just as quickly the thing multiplies tenfold. Soon all the residents will be facing the new eight-legged residents, and hopefully some will survive.As usual in these “when animals attack” movies, the characters do some STUPID things. Like, over and over again.Wasn’t there a window on the first floor that you could crawl out of?
Gosh, every stupid mistake you can make happened here
Granted, I’d probably panic too, or with my arachnophobia, just have a heart attack in a dark building full of spiders.My biggest problem was that there were no time jumps to make this even remotely realistic. And to me, the more realistic, the more terrifying it is. Here one spider lays its egg sac, and within minutes the whole tower is covered in them. Plus, they grow to almost human size with each new episode. That didn’t stop me from jumping out of my seat and cursing loudly so many times, though, that I had to constantly pause the movie to recover. So, yes, they did have their effect on my fears.
Just try not to imagine them on your own skin
And if you also suffer from the same fear of these abominations, you’ll probably get some great scares here too. You just have to get through some difficult/long scenes in the first half hour that set up the characters. While they felt like real people who really live in the same confined space, it was almost brutal to get through so much exposition to get to what we’d pressed play for: a spider invasion. It’s not bad, and in most of the spider scenes, they looked like real spiders (well, except for the 3-foot-tall kinds). ***Final Thoughts: It pains me to give this a mediocre rating. I did the same for Fall 2022 – which was about my biggest fear: heights.
And since when are spiders social bloodsuckers?
(Spiders are my number 2.) That movie just suffered from cliches and really bad characters that I didn’t care about. The problem with that movie was the speed at which they reproduced and the size they grew to.
