Gary Oldman was originally rumored to be cast, but was replaced by Kevin Kline
Plot
It follows Catherine Ravenscroft, a television documentary journalist whose work has been based on revealing the transgressions of long-respected institutions. In several episodes, Jonathon uses the same lens throughout the series, a medium-length telephoto. Such a lens would be incapable of focusing on close subjects like selfies with Sasha or in the bedroom with Catherine.
At its core, this is a revenge story
Yikes! I wasn’t aware of the experience I was in for when I started watching this AppleTV+ limited series starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline. “Disclaimer” is based on a novel of the same name by Renée Knight, and was written for the screen and directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
Blanchett, as always, is fantastic here and Kline also gives a solid performance
Blanchett plays Catherine, a journalist whose secrets from her past resurface in an alarming way, causing her to confront that past as it wreaks havoc on her entire life. This was a masterfully told story, taking us on a fascinating journey of discovery as the audience is shown (sometimes in vivid detail) the “events” of Catherine’s past. It was surprising to see Sacha Baron Cohen in a more serious role, but he did it justice.
But I’m glad I stuck around
Despite a couple of minor criticisms, I highly recommend this series if you like character dramas with some added tension/intrigue. Note: There are some pretty graphic depictions of sex/intimacy shown throughout several episodes. It’s not action-packed, and it took me about halfway through the episode (about 30 minutes) before I finally got “hooked” on the story.
